Nagoya Porcelain Painting — A Tradition Since the Meiji Era
Since the Meiji era, porcelain from the Seto region has been decorated using traditional painting techniques developed in Nagoya. With a long history, this delicate and beautiful decoration has reached and been appreciated around the world. Today, very few artisans carry on these techniques. We cherish and preserve the rare skills that have been passed down to us.
The Nagoya Porcelain Painting Process
- A preliminary sketch or design is drawn on white porcelain.
- An artisan paints the design one brushstroke at a time using overglaze colors containing glass-forming material.
- The piece is fired in a kiln at approximately 700–850°C.
- During firing, the glass-forming material melts and envelops the pigments, firmly bonding the design to the ceramic surface.
- When gold decoration is applied, the piece may be fired once more at a lower temperature to complete the finish.
This glassy layer gives the decoration vivid color, a smooth sheen, and durability, helping it retain its beauty over time.
